Vol.78 Come with Me and Play with Me, a Sparrow Separated from the Parents (1)
Dec.06,2024
The title is quoted from one of the most famous works written by haiku poet master Kobayashi Issa, which is said to express the emotion of Issa, who lost his mother when he was a child.

A zoologist says that sparrows and pigeons are classified as livestock. This is because sparrows and pigeons build nests within man-made structures and raise their children in the nests, and I actually feed them in my garden twice a day.

Sparrows raise three to four clutches every season, but an average of nearly 20 young sparrows gather in my garden. After eating the feed, they chase each other and take dust baths, leaving about 10 holes in the field. All of the young sparrows in my garden are slim, but I found a little fat one this year.

When I looked at them carefully, I witnessed four times that this parent sparrow fed a specific child mouth-to-mouth. The young sparrow ate the feed, with its wings trembling slightly, but I am not sure whether it is underdeveloped or it has such kind of habit.

Young sparrows usually leave their parents before growing up and start living in a group. Unlike their nature, this parent sparrow stayed in the group to feed a specific child, which seems to resemble a parent-child relationship in human society.
End.
