A judge once said in a verdict,
"The life of a single person
outweighs the earth." I remember
that it made a strong impression
on me, who was then a college
student. Even in today, most of
the supporters of abolishing the
death penalty often quote it as
a golden rule.
However,
this phrase sounds exaggerated
to me. Human beings are only one
of many living things on earth
and kill other species for food.
As a result of human society
damaging the natural
environment, many species on
earth have become extinct or
endangered.
Some
people say that eating cows,
pigs, and chickens are ethical
while eating dogs and monkeys
are barbaric, but on what
grounds?
With
higher intelligence, humans have
evolved in the fields of
science, chemistry, and art, but
animals such as cows and pigs
are biologically no different
from humans, which evolved from
apes. What would happen now if
pigs had evolved instead of apes
and taken control over apes as
food?
I often say,
"Humans are not very smart."
This contains a wish, from a
biological point of view, that
they should be humbler.
