Pardons |

In the NHK documentary program
"Last Lecture," biologist
Shinichi Fukuoka, a professor at
Aoyama Gakuin University, said
the following: "In the human
body, all cells are renewed
within one year, from muscles to
bones. So, nothing should be
blamed for a lie made one year
ago." It is a joke, of course,
so even when brain cells are
renewed, the memory and judgment
skill are passed on to the new
cells.
As my father
called me reckless, I think I
made more mistakes and caused
more troubles than most people,
especially when I was young.
Every time I read newspaper
articles or watch TV dramas that
call up such past memories, I am
embarrassed. However, I
immediately try to leave the
past behind by telling myself
that I will not make the same
mistakes.
Now that
many years have passed, there
are only some people left who
know the failures of my youth.
When I get older, my strength
weakens, but I found an
advantage.
My
father, who passed away at the
age of 95, once told me, "My
friends and acquaintances die
every year. If I should die,
there are not many who give
monetary offerings, so I rather
get them now."
In
that sense, I cannot help
thinking about how many more
years I need to live to get
pardons for all my failures.
Please do not get the
wrong idea about my pardons. I
assure you that I have never
committed any crimes.
