Vol.39
Compare with Yourself |
|
|
"I see whether I am poor or not
by comparing myself to others."
This is what former Tokyo
Governor Shintaro Ishihara said
to the TV audience. This is
similar to the sayings "There's
always someone better off and
someone worse off." and "It runs
the gamut." Meanwhile, there is
an opposite proverb, such as
"One should be satisfied without
desiring more wealth and rank
than necessary."
These
expressions remind us that this
way of thinking has been always
with people since the old times.
Unlike animals, humans have
unlimited desires, and some act
on their own greed even at the
expense of others.
On
the other hand, some volunteer
for others or societies while
sacrificing their own time and
money. The gap between the rich
and the poor widens no matter
what government is in power.
This is inevitable in human
societies with various desires.
Since humans have
earthly desires, each must
control themselves deep inside.
How further can you improve
yourself while fairly qualifying
your circumstances and
capabilities? Set a specific
goal to a level you can reach
based on your educational,
social, and financial status and
work hard for it. Do not
compare or compete with others
or societies as you will never
know how to handle yourself.
Instead, always compare with
yourself and focus on the goal,
so that you will more easily
have mental stability. If you
have physical and mental
strength left when achieving the
goal, then set a new target.
